Homemade Lip Scrub

Homemade Exfoliating Lip Scrub

Lip scrub is a gentle exfoliant used to soften dry, chapped or peeling lips. Although a variety of effective commercial lip scrubs are on the market, they are specialty products that can be hard on the budget.

1. Homemade Sugar Scrub To make this scrub, use equal amounts of brown sugar and white sugar. (For a 6 oz. jar that equals about 1/4 cup of each.) Then, fill the jar to the top with olive oil. It should cover the sugars and then add an extra half inch of oil. Finally, just add about 1-2 tablespoons of vanilla extract and stir.

2. Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub To make this hand scrub, start by mixing 2 1/2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil. Add 4 tablespoons of lemon juice (or scented essential oils). Mix until it is gritty. This is enough to fill a 12 oz. jar.

3. Homemade Salt Scrub For this scrub, you need to mix 1 1/2 cups of sea salt with 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil together. Then cut 3 large lemons in half and squeeze the juice all over the salt mixture. Stir it until it’s well blended. This makes 6 mini salt scrubs. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to a week.

4. Homemade Sensual Sugar Scrub To make this scrub, mix together 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1/4 cup of olive oil, and add a little bit of massage oil for a sensual scent.

5. Yummy Lip Scrub To make this lip scrub, pour 1 teaspoon of sugar into a small container. Add 2 tablespoons of honey (or olive oil). Then add a squirt of Vaseline and mix them all together. Using your finger, rub it on your lips and let it exfoliate. Then wipe it off and you’ll have softer lips.

10 Natural beauty fixes in your fridge

Beauty-Fixes-Natural beauty fixes in your fridgeSometimes Mother Nature gets a bad press; we moan that she gives us cramps once a month and that she cursed us with this frizzy mop of so-called hair. However, we’re about to unleash 10 natural beauty fixes that Mother Nature bestowed on us from her personal stash of treasures. So ladies, sit up and take notes. Here are 10 homemade beauty goodies you can find within your fridge.

Beauty fixes and homemade beauty products

Beauty fixes in your fridge 1: Sugar

Spending hours curling your hair or building the perfect chignon takes time, patience and sheer, super-human skill. So the last thing you want is for all of your hard work to be undone by a gusty blast of wind. To keep your  hair in place, create your own hairspray using sugar and water.  Add six teaspoons of sugar to boiling water and leave to cool. Then squirt onto your hair for lasting bounce and that all-day hold.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 2: Pineapple juice

We have news; pineapple juice is not just great for pina coladas, it’s also great for our skin. Pour some pineapple juice into ice trays and leave in your freezer overnight. Once frozen, pass the pineapple ice cubes over your skin and leave for five minutes before rinsing. The pineapple enzymes keep our pretty faces hydrated and help skin stay supple, fresh and bright.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 3: Natural yoghurt

Life is tough on hair. To keep parched ends conditioned whip up this nourishing natural yoghurt hair mask. Yoghurt contains antibacterial properties and lots of protein that, when applied to hair, helps keep our locks dandruff free, strong and deeply moisturised.  For your natural hair mask apply natural yoghurt to dry hair and leave for 15 minutes. Then rinse and voila: beautiful, shiny tresses.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 4: Coconut oil, honey and sugar

For luscious lips prepare this lip scrub. All you need is some coconut oil, some clear honey and some brown sugar. Add one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of coconut oil to a bowl and mix until smooth. Then add one teaspoon of brown sugar and stir. Your luxurious lip scrub is now ready, so pop it into a cute, little jar and leave in your fridge. The scrub will last for two weeks, keeping your lips kissable  and your pout perfect.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 5: Milk

To get that dewy, flawless skin you’ve been craving pull out your milk carton and get to work on brewing up this hot, fresh cleanser. Pour some milk into a pan and heat to boiling point before emptying the pan into a heated bowl. Then put a towel over your head and steam your face using the hot milk mix. The lactic acid in this steaming cleanse wil unclog your pores.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 6: Limes

We love limes. Not only is this citrus fruit a great colour, they are also fabulously good for your nails.  Cut a lime in half and rub the fruit over your nails. Then dangle your talons into a small bowl of water and dissolve some bicarbonate soda into the mixture. After five minutes remove your nails and dry. You should be left with gleaming, white and shiny nails.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 7: Temperature

To get that after-spa feeling for less delve into your fridge and boil the kettle. Take your hot water bottle and fill it with hot water. Then cut cucumber slices onto a plate. Next, lie under a blanket with the lights off and place the water bottle at your feet and the cucumber slices on your face. The contrast of temperatures – of hot and cold – will relax you and once you emerge from your blanketed den you will feel like you can take on the world.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 8: Cranberries

For your own pop of lip colour make this beautiful lip gloss. Add one tablespoon of almond oil into a bowl, along with a handful of cranberries and some clear honey. Then add a drop of vitamin E oil, which protects you from free radicals like sunlight and cigarette smoke. Put the bowl with the lipgloss mix into a microwave and blast for five minutes. Once cool strain the mix and leave to cool before adding it to a lipgloss container.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 9: Lemons and eggs

Take your skincare regime back to basics and ditch a few of those expensive products that promise the world. You can achieve tightened and toned skin using a few eggs and lemons. To begin cut a lemon in half and squeeze its juice into a bowl, adding one egg white. Then beat the mixture and apply to your face. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes and kick back and listen to some music whilst you wait.

Beauty fixes in your fridge 10: Almonds and mayonnaise

To feel like a goddess make your own softening and exfoliating lotion. Crush almonds and mix with mayonnaise. Apply to your skin in circular motions. You could don a pair of exfoliating mitts to intensify the process. Once applied, leave the mix on for five minutes before rinsing in the shower. Once clean your skin will be beautifully soft and fresh

Mint Lemonade Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

Mint-Lemonade-Lip-Scrub-RecipeIt is not easy to make a Mint Lemonade Sugar Lip Scrub . The scent blend would need some tweaking and they thought it would be good to help in this fun project. Jordan is getting married in July and she wants to make a Mint Lemonade Sugar Scrub for the out of town guests and still be able to mimic the mint lemonade that will be served at the wedding.

During my testing several of the staff fell in love with this fragrance blend, so I was able to persuade the New Products team to come up with pricing for this yummy blend! I currently have a price of $4.50 for 1 fl oz of the Jordan’s Mint Lemonade blend. We will release this blend shortly, so if you can’t wait you can blend it yourself. You will find out how to make your own Mint Lemonade Sugar Lip Scrub  below.

I wasn’t sure how much of various scents to blend so she called on us to help. Today, I’ll be showing what we made for the scrub.

Mint Lemonade Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 16 ozWhite Granulated Sugar
  • 8 oz Grapeseed Oil
  • Lemon Sugar Fragrance Oil
  • Lemon USA Essential Oil
  • Spearmint Essential Oil
  • Container for mixing
  • Scale
  • Spoon
  • Transfer Pipettes
  • Containers and caps
  • .24 ounces of Mint Lemonade Blend (Using the fragrance oil at a 1% rate)

Mint Lemonade Sugar Lip Scrub Instructions

Make Mint Lemonade Fragrance

Blend a fragrance to match her desired scent. Her first idea was Lemon Sugar with a little Spearmint Essential Oil for the mint note. I made a test with 20 drops of Lemon Sugar and 1 drop of Spearmint in a Clear Glass Dram. After I let the blend sit for an hour, I smelled it and decided that we needed to add a sharp Lemon note, because the Lemon Sugar didn’t have the tang we wanted. I added 5 drops of Lemon USA, which is our sharper Lemon Essential Oil. That fixed my Lemon notes, but there was only one person on staff who could pick up a faint mint tone to the blend. I added 1 more drop of Spearmint. I still couldn’t smell mint so I started with a new Clear Glass Dram and added 20 drops of Lemon Sugar, 5 drops of Lemon USA, and 4 drops of Spearmint. The mint note was stronger and I could finally smell the mint. This blend was very polite and I thought it was very good. I still had to go back to the drawing board to see if 8 drops of Spearmint would overpower the Lemon or not. I got a new Clear Glass Dram and tested again! I added 20 drops of Lemon Sugar, 5 drops of Lemon USA, and 8 drops of Spearmint to this dram bottle and let it sit. Wow! This blend I think was the best! There was a great balance between the mint and lemon. We didn’t want the mint to overpower the lemon, which it can do easily.

I needed to make 1 oz of the fragrance blend for scrub testing, so I used the percentages to calculate how much I needed to blend enough for 1 oz.

Fragrance Blend in Weight for 1 oz
0.60 ounces Lemon Sugar Fragrance Oil
0.15 ounces Lemon Essential Oil, USA
0.25 ounces Spearmint Essential Oil

During my testing several of the staff fell in love with this fragrance blend, so I was able to persuade the New Products team to come up with pricing for this yummy blend! I currently have a price of $4.50 for 1 fl oz of the Jordan’s Mint Lemonade blend. We will release this blend shortly, so if you can’t wait you can blend it yourself. If you want us to blend this for you, check our New Products section.

Now the fragrance has been blended, we can work on making the scrub. Jordan is planning on using Grapeseed Oil as the oil in her scrub, so we just need to mix a scrub that meets our requirements. We started with 8 ounces of Grapeseed Oil and then I started adding sugar and stirring until I had a very thick sugar scrub. I ended up using 16 ounces of sugar, which means that our sugar and oil ratio is 2:1. This ratio is one of the easiest ratios to work with on sugar scrubs.

Fill containers with mixed scrub. Stir the scrub mixture frequently while filling the jars to keep an evenly filled jar.

This recipe makes about 16 fluid ounces of sugar scrub. I used a 2 oz jar for my container and I filled 8 jars.

Lemonade Lip Scrub Recipe

Lemonade-Lip-Scrub-RecipeCracked, dry, flaky lips are unattractive and also irritating, and lip scrubs help prevent this, leaving your lips feeling smooth and silky!

Here’s my easy, inexpensive recipe for a yummy lemonade lip scrub. Caster sugar is usually used for baking, but normal sugar would be granulated sugar which is too coarse to use as an exfoliator and can cause the lips to bleed.

Caster sugar has smaller granules and is much more delicate and effective you can find caster sugar at your local grocery store though! Now onto the lemonade lip scrub recipe.

Lemonade Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

  • White Granulated Sugar
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Lemon Sugar Fragrance Oil
  • Lemon USA Essential Oil
  • Spearmint Essential Oil
  • Container for mixing
  • Scale
  • Spoon
  • Transfer Pipettes
  • Containers and caps

Lemonade Lip Scrub Instructions

To make this lip food, you will need: a small amount of lemon juice, a teaspoon of petroleum jelly (original Vaseline), a small tin or jar, 4 teaspoons of caster sugar and two toothpicks

Firstly, gradually add the lemon juice to the caster sugar and mix with your provided toothpick until a thick gooey paste is formed…

Keep adding the lemon juice gradually! The lemon juice acts as a lip cleanser- the acid of the lemon kills the bacteria on the lips. It also tastes great too! Do not add too much lemon juice in one go! If you’ve added too much juice, just even it out with a couple more teaspoons of sugar. The sugar acts as an exfoliator to the lips, removing the dead skin.

The paste should look like this.

Now leave the paste to the side for a while. We need to heat our petroleum jelly in the microwave for about 2 minutes.

After two minutes in the microwave, the petroleum jelly should be liquid as shown above. The petroleum jelly acts as a moisturizer and gives your new soft lips a lovely polish!

Now pour the paste into the basin of petroleum jelly and mix with a couple of toothpicks. The paste will become runny again if you have noticed.

We don’t want runny paste! To re-thicken the paste, gradually add teaspoons of caster sugar.

And a little more lemon juice to add some flavour!

The paste should be a lot thicker than before as the petroleum jelly hardens, and should look like this. (shown above) Finally, pour your lip scrub into your tin/jar and you’re done!

Taa daaa! a long lasting, homemade, tasty lip scrub that can be used anytime and anywhere!

Bubblegum Lip Scrub Recipe

Bubblegum Lip ScrubI love Lush’s bubblegum lip scrub, but the price is outrageous and I find the taste…slightly odd. Probably the castor oil. Here’s an alternative that is gift-able, simple to make, much cheaper, and so delicious!

Don’t forgot your lips  — Keep them pouting smooth with this Bubble Gum Lip Scrub Recipe.  All natural and vegan, and a totally edible finished product.  This scrub can be used daily just before you add your lip stick or gloss.

Bubblegum Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Caster Sugar (extra fine sugar)
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Natural Flavor Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Lip Tints (Crimson & Melon) mixed to make pink
  • Glass Jar & Label
bubblegum flavorWith a small pipette or dropper, add a drop or two of the flavoring to two tablespoons of sugar. Add gradually and taste as you go! If you over do it, mix in a bit more sugar.

adding flavor

Now, we need this to be a bright pink, so add one drop of red food coloring.

adding color

Mix well. To get a silky smooth finish to your scrub, you’ll want to add some oil. You can use castor, or jojoba, or olive oil. But I thought vitamin E oil would work perfectly and not have a weird taste. I used about a teaspoon.

Lick your lips, dip your finger into your scrub to scoop a little out, and rub. When you’re done you can rinse…but why do that when you can lick your lips?!?!

Bubblegum Lip Scrub Instructions

Add sugar (as much as you’d like to make) to a stainless steel bowl.Drizzle jojoba oil into the sugar until it is coated, but not runny.  Add your flavor oil (as much as you’d like) and stir well.   Mix some of the lip balm tints into a little jojoba oil until you obtain the pink color and mix it in a little at a time.  Add a few drops of Vitamin E oil.  Spoon into jars and label.  This is a very easy Bubblegum Lip Scrub recipe and you can add any flavor you like.
Shelf life 1-2 yrs.

Use: Scoop out a small amount of the scrub and rub into lips for 30 seconds.  Rinse.

Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

Making your own lip scrub is easy, you are basically making a paste using super fine sugar and oil or vegetable glycerin. Superfine sugar can be purchased in the bar tending section of your grocery store, to make your own lip scrub, as well as Safflower oil which is naturally high in vitamin e.

You do not need a preservative when you are working with oil based products or vegetable glycerin. Vegetable Glycerin is water based, but is so high in natural alcohol, it also does not need a preservative when making a lip scrub with it. It will not mix with oil, so make your choice between the two. The only way lip scrub can go bad is just over time, oil based products can go rancid. That just means store your lip scrubs in a cool dark place and they should last a year or two. Because lip scrubs can “clump” after a few months, it is probably best to make them “fresh” as you need it. I have never figured out a way to stop clumping. Lets make some sugar lip scrub.

Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 T coconut oil, in solid form
  • 1 T honey
  • 1 T brown sugar (I used light because it’s what I had on hand. I don’t think dark brown sugar would make a difference)
IMG 2875
1. Add 1 T coconut oil in its solid state to a bowl.  If the oil is clumpy, whip it up until it is smooth. Then add 1 T honey to it and whip up until it looks something like this:
IMG 2876
2. Add 1 T brown sugar and mix together. Put in a little container and you’re done! Total prep time? 3 minutes! Also, this doesn’t need to be refrigerated.
*note: if you find the scrub is too abrasive, try 2 teaspoons of brown sugar instead.  I’ve tried both and prefer 1 T.*
IMG 2878

Sugar Lip Scrub Instructions

To use: rub a little sugar lip scrub on your lips for 30 seconds-1 minute. You can then let it rest for 3-5 minutes to let the oil penetrate and moisturize your lips, or you can lick it off (it tastes delicious…or so I was told…) or wipe it off. Repeat 2-3 times a week. Enjoy you’re soft, sumptuous lips.

Vegan Lip Scrub Recipe

Vegan-Lip-Scrub-RecipeMy lips have taken a real beating over the last week. The British weather really is designed to confuse and we get a reputation for always talking about it, but if you had weather that changed so frequently an so massively, you would too!!

This vegan lip scrub recipe’s secret is in the agave nectar (no honey needed!); it also contains vanilla extract for that delicious kick.

It’s easy-peasy to make your own version of wonderful lip scrub without any harsh chemicals, animal ingredients or artificial anything in 3 simple steps.  Here’s a great, truly-natural tip to give you softer, more supple lips. Enjoy!

  • Use as often as needed.
  • Softly press mixture on lips in circular motion.  The mixture will get into your mouth, but no worries.  Everything is natural and edible and, not to mention, nutritious.  Rinse with warm water and pat dry.  DO NOT LICK LIPS!

Sugar Honey Lip Scrub Recipe

How to get the softest kissable lips it’s simple! Just use honey, olive oil and sugar. Sugar acts as the abrasive and it dissolves so you don’t need to worry about “grit” getting in your mouth. Honey has anti-bacterial properties, is usually non-allergenic, and tastes good. Olive oil moisturizes, protects, soothes, is tasteless in the scrub, and is non-toxic and generally non-allergenic. It won’t clog your pores around the mouth either.

Each batch should be good for 1 week.

Apply the Sugar Honey Lip Scrub to lips, gently rubbing in a circular motion.  Rinse off excess with water.  The brown sugar will rinse off leaving a small amount of the olive oil behind, which adds moisture and a little shine to your lips.  Follow with your favorite all-natural lip balm if desired.  This recipe makes enough for one application.

How to use:

  • Take a dime size amount of scrub and rub gently onto dry lips.
  • Gently rub until some of the sugar has dissolved.
  • Rinse well with warm water.
  • Apply lip balm as necessary.
  • Use twice a week and your lips should be silky soft.

Peppermint Lip Scrub Recipe

Peppermint-Lip-Scrub-RecipeAnother beautiful Friday and that means another DIY project.  This week:  make your own lip scrub with natural ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

There’s no need to spend money on a lip scrub when you can make it yourself – for less – and you control what goes in it.

So gather up your supplies, and say goodbye to rough, dry lips! Try out this Peppermint Lip Scrub Recipe below.

Peppermint Lip Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

  • One Pot for storage
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon caster sugar
  • Peppermint oil
  • Almond Oil/Vitamin E oil
  • Glass Ramekin (for mixing)

Peppermint Lip Scrub Instructions

To make:  Pour the sugar into the ramekin and then add the oils depending how you want the consistency of the lip scrub. I used about a quarter of a teaspoons of each oil as I like to add the liquid so there is enough flavor and enough liquid for it to hold together, but not so the solution is runny.  A variant of this scrub is that it can be used with lemon oil as well, or generally any other COOKING oil you like the taste of!

To Use: To use the scrub dab a small amount onto lips and rub together to gently exfoliate. You can then lick off the scrub or wipe off with a cloth.  This product can be stored at room temperature.

Tip:  If you have Vitamin E capsules, poke one with a pin and squeeze the oil into your Peppermint Lip Scrub Recipe.
